From the Cadeco stable renowned for its quality railway productions, comes the latest ‘must have’ title. Northern Exposures celebrates NSWGR in the northern regions of the state for the final years of steam operations. The Cadeco name brings together photographers with long and formidable reputations in the field of railway photography – names like Shane McCarthy, Greg Triplett, Graham Cotterall, Ray Love, Laurie Anderson, Robert Kingsford-Smith, and many others.
This book is destined to be a collector's piece you can use to share stories and memories of what it was like back in the days when steam was King. We have printed limited copies and it will sell out. Divided into chapters based broadly on regional operations, the book starts with the Gosford-Newcastle section – the Short North – and stretches beyond to the Queensland border at Wallangarra and South Brisbane plus branch lines. This full colour, high quality publication pays tribute to NSW steam in every aspect of daily life. But Northern Exposures is much more than a photographic essay .
Each section is penned by someone who was there, recalling the detail and anecdotes of the time. You may have been around back then, or know someone who was. You will read about the 65 foot tree scaled by rail fans for spectacular shots, super fast steam runs on the Newcastle Flyer, the Merriwa branch, North Coast and Northern Lines which spread all the way to Brisbane via coastal and inland routes. "Northern Exposures" relives the history of those days. Many of us were still at school wagging classes, fare evading and walking long distances just to get a precious shot or two. At one stage we set up camp at famous Hawkmount and there were many nights sleeping on unattended railway stations. It was an incredible period in steam history.
If you would like to be informed when the book is available for delivery, please join our pre-publication watch list by filling in the form on the right. Your name will not be passed on to any one else, and you will know when printing is complete. It ensures you don't miss out on your copy as we have a very limited print run. |

Thank you for the magnificent publication 'Northern Exposures', which arrived yesterday. The image quality of the photos is outstanding. The supporting text is excellent and certainly brings back happy memories, especially my own photo expeditions to the Short North and particularly Hawkmount.

Received the book today. Had a quick
peak (fathers day present for my husband). I'm very impressed with the
detail and quality of the photos and book in general. Great job.

Aged but not daunted, many of the photographers featured in
"Northern Exposures" are among this group, as are the authors. The
idea of this superb publication was born on this trip headed by
3642, reliving the days of the "Newcastle Flyer", possibly the most
famous train in NSW over the last 75 years. It has taken 2 years, but from a scribble on a scrap of paper on that trip, "Northern Exposures" has developed into a full blown masterpiece representing the very best of steam photography north of Sydney. |
To give you an idea of the content, this is a list of Chapter Headings. I even managed to get one of my own in, having timed over 30 Newcastle Flyers during the 1960s and early 1970s.
For me, the most exciting part of this book is the extensive coverage of the North Coast and Main Northern lines during the latter days of steam. To whet your appetite, here is a wonderfully composed shot of double 59s on the North Coast line.
